About

During the summer, families enjoy the Paw Paw District Fair and Rivesville Riverfront Festival. The house of George Pickney Morgan, a farmer, and inventor who greatly contributed to Marion County, is located in Rivesville. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

No trip to Rivesville is complete without a visit to Short Story Brewing, Assumption Records, and DeMary’s Market. Both DeMary’s and Assumption were featured in the Feast of the Seven Fishes Movie.

History

A former coal town, Rivesville is located on the north-west bank of the Monongahela River and is said to be the home of the Rivesville River Monster. The town was founded in 1837 and named after William Cabell Rives, a lawyer, and diplomat. The town’s population dramatically increased at the start of the 20th century as the development of large-scale coal mining grew in the area. Rivesville was at the junction between the Paw Paw branch of the B&O Railroad and the Buckhannon & Northern Railroad, a branch of the Monongahela Railway.
